Species Conservation

Supporting native species is a main goal of the Heritage Division. We work to protect against invasives, and to conserve native species and their homes statewide. This is done primarily through surveying and stewardship activities and is supported by the Endangered Species Act. Species conservation is more important than ever as human influence, both direct and indirect, continue to make lasting impacts on wildlife and their behaviors. Some species, such as those listed as endangered or threatened, require some extra help to persist. Populations of these species are carefully monitored, and their needs are considered in conservation plans crafted by conservation professionals. Tailored specifically to each species, the conservation plan serves as a guide to stabilize wild populations, thus allowing them to persist on their own for generations to come.
